American Center for Mobility

Laurel Champion is Chief Operating Officer for the American Center for Mobility at Willow Run, a non-profit testing, education and product development facility for future mobility. In addition to responsibilities for all operational activities, Laurel leads communication and marketing efforts for ACM, which was formed in 2016 to enable safe validation and self-certification of connected and automated vehicle technology and security, and to accelerate the development of voluntary standards.

Prior to joining the executive leadership team at ACM, Laurel was general manager for Southeast Michigan for the MLive Media Group, and had an extensive career in the media industry for 25 years. She has worked in various roles for Advance Publications in Syracuse, NY, and New Orleans, LA, before moving to Ann Arbor, MI, in 2001.

Laurel was Executive Vice President and co-founder of, an online digital company launched in 2009 to serve greater Ann Arbor, and in 2013, she led the integration of into the MLive Media Group. Laurel was the publisher of The Ann Arbor News from 2005 until 2009.

Laurel is a co-founder of Ann Arbor SPARK, having served on its Executive Committee for 11 years, and continues to serve on its Development Committee. She is also a past campaign co-chair for the Washtenaw United Way, and served as vice chair of the Washtenaw United Way board. Laurel is also a past member of the A2Y Chamber Board of Directors and executive committee.

She has been active in the Detroit Regional Chamber, the Detroit and Washtenaw Economic Clubs and Inforum, and has volunteered with many organizations including Washtenaw Literacy, St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital Holiday Ball, the Community Success Strategy for the Ann Arbor Region and the former Center for Occupational and Personalized Education.
